Rochdale Council has approved the transformation of a former nursery into the Whitehall Academy, a special needs school for children with complex needs.
The school will cater to 20-30 primary-aged pupils, offering specialised support for autism, learning difficulties, and neurological conditions. The new facility, funded privately, will also support children receiving mental health services, providing a holistic curriculum focused on individual development.
The former Channings Childcare site, closed in 2022 after an Ofsted report, will see new life serving the community once again. Whitehall Academy’s curriculum prioritises both educational and emotional growth, incorporating the local community and outdoor environments to create a well-rounded experience for its students. This venture reflects the ongoing commitment to improving special needs education in Rochdale.
The building’s conversion retains much of its original structure, with minimal external changes. The facility will include classrooms, a multipurpose room, and office space, ensuring it meets the unique needs of its students. The school also plans to keep the outdoor playground and parking area intact, providing accessibility and convenience for both staff and families.
“Whitehall Academy strives to provide a broad and holistic curriculum that caters to pupils with a variety of needs, ensuring every learner has the chance to thrive.”
The creation of Whitehall Academy is a positive step for the community, offering a much-needed resource for families of children with complex needs. The school’s focus on inclusivity, community integration, and holistic education will be instrumental in supporting the development of its students.
