Plans for new ‘high quality’ children’s nursery in Tunbridge Wells

A new children’s nursery, described as “high-quality” and purpose-built for up to 146 children, is on track to become a significant asset in Tunbridge Wells.

Planned by Sgate Toomey (TW) Limited, in partnership with The Learning Experience—a well-known nursery chain—the project awaits approval from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. With centres in the US and a growing presence in the UK, The Learning Experience has built a reputation for its unique approach to early childhood development.

Comprehensive Facilities and a Safe Environment

The design prioritises child-friendly facilities and safety. Inside, the nursery will feature nine themed classrooms, each equipped with integral toilets and changing stations. “Make Believe Boulevard,” a dedicated indoor play area, offers an immersive learning environment where children can engage in imaginative play. Outdoors, a large fenced play area with artificial grass will give children safe space to play and learn in a structured but fun environment. These safety measures extend throughout the building, with all hallways and classrooms featuring rounded edges and high-spec security, including monitored cameras.

Thoughtfully Located and Designed for Convenience

The nursery will be located in an underutilised car park behind the Sainsbury’s petrol station on Linden Park Road, near the busy A26. While the site is currently vacant, it’s seen as a prime location that aligns well with local infrastructure and accessibility needs. For parents and caregivers, entry will be through the Sainsbury’s car park, and the facility will retain 26 parking spaces out of the original 97 to support safe, hassle-free drop-off and pick-up. To further support sustainable commuting, there will be secure cycle and scooter storage, along with a buggy storage area.

A Progressive Curriculum: Learn, Play, Grow

The Learning Experience offers a unique curriculum designed to nurture every aspect of a child’s development, encapsulated in its slogan “Learn, Play, Grow.” Activities focus on a holistic approach, using fun, hands-on experiences that encourage social, cognitive, and intellectual growth. From structured play to interactive learning stations, the curriculum has proven success in creating a foundation for lifelong learning.

Employment and Community Impact

This nursery is set to provide a boost to the local economy, with an estimated increase in employment opportunities, both in childcare roles and in support staff positions. Not only does this address the growing need for childcare services in Tunbridge Wells, but it also adds valuable employment and enhances the community’s overall appeal.

The Tunbridge Wells facility represents one of several new UK locations for The Learning Experience, which launched its first UK centre in Finchley in 2020 and now operates locations in Leatherhead and Weybridge. Each centre is designed to foster an environment where children feel safe, encouraged, and ready to explore their potential.

The Next Steps

Pending approval, construction is expected to begin later this year, with the goal of welcoming children to the facility in the near future. As the area’s demand for quality childcare continues to grow, Tunbridge Wells stands to gain a modern nursery that combines thoughtful design with educational expertise. The proposed site provides easy access for families in the surrounding area, aligning with the borough’s commitment to accessible community resources.
