Labour’s education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has announced a £15 million capital scheme to fund up to 300 school-based nurseries in primary schools, starting in 2025.
The initiative seeks to repurpose underused classroom spaces to create more childcare options, boosting the availability of early education. Schools can apply for funds to convert unused spaces and will have the flexibility to run nurseries themselves or collaborate with external providers.
This project aims to address childcare gaps, especially in underserved areas, while supporting the government’s broader plan to provide 30 hours of funded early education per week. Schools are encouraged to assess local needs and begin discussions with stakeholders to ensure that the programme benefits children from disadvantaged backgrounds and working families. The programme’s first phase will evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, shaping future rollouts.
“We have to change the odds so success belongs to each and every child, in every school, in every corner of our country.” – Bridget Phillipson
This initiative is a step forward in making childcare more accessible for families, particularly in areas facing economic challenges. It’s a strategic move to repurpose existing infrastructure to serve the next generation, enhancing both children’s educational outcomes and parents’ employment opportunities.
