Banff and Buchan Area Committee has given the green light to create a brand-new Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) facility in Fraserburgh.
The new nursery, expected to open in 2026, will be based at the existing St Andrew’s School site on Albert Street, which will undergo a significant refurbishment. This project promises to offer modern, purpose-built facilities, replacing the current provisions at Fraserburgh North and St Andrew’s Schools.
The new nursery will feature an array of enhanced facilities, including substantial outdoor spaces designed for active learning, sensory areas for a calming environment, and quiet spaces to support children’s overall development. The aim is to create an inclusive, stimulating environment that supports a wide range of learning styles and activities.
Councillor Doreen Mair, Chair of the Banff and Buchan Area Committee, expressed her enthusiasm, stating: “This new nursery will inspire our youngsters with learning and play opportunities that they do not currently have. It will encourage them to develop healthy, active lifestyles through first-class indoor and outdoor play spaces.”
The decision comes at a time when Fraserburgh is looking to expand its capacity to provide high-quality early years education. During the construction phase, the current nursery services will continue to operate from their existing sites, ensuring no disruption to families.
Once completed, the new nursery will offer modern amenities and a nurturing environment, helping to boost children’s self-confidence and potential. It will also retain two classroom spaces within the refurbished building to assist with the transition from nursery to Primary 1, ensuring continuity in the children’s early educational journey.
The project has been designed with the future in mind, making excellent use of the existing infrastructure. As Cllr Mair remarked, “This will make excellent use of a much-loved Fraserburgh building, ensuring its future for generations to come.”

The decision to invest in new ELC facilities in Fraserburgh is a promising step forward for early years education in the area. By prioritising both indoor and outdoor learning environments, the council is ensuring that children will have a well-rounded educational experience that encourages physical activity, creativity, and exploration. This project not only supports local children but also preserves and repurposes a historical community building for future generations to enjoy.
